Klavium debut EP review

Image result for klavium         Today I gave the two man thrash metal band from Trinidad, Klavium a listen. Their EP was oozing with potential and talent. I think most metal heads will like the music but especially those who are into the classic thrash metal vibe of the late eighties. Klavium is definitely staying true to the thrash metal roots as the entire EP is almost a salute to bands like Slayer and Anthrax with their quick violent loops and tuned down guitars.

The first song I listened to was called "Cursed Within" the intro to this song is nothing short of perfection and reminded me of the classic intros from the album "Reign in blood" by slayer. It's fast and its angry and it gets the blood pumping in a matter of seconds. About five seconds into the song the vocals start with an ear piercing pig shriek that is equally disturbing and wonderful. From there on in the song seems to develop more of a black metal vocal style while keeping the musical elements invested in the thrash style. The vocals are constantly shrieking throughout the entire song, and only stop for a matter of seconds at a time so that the drums and guitar can have their moment in the spot light. Of course there was the bone chilling breakdown that happens at the end of the song which I thought was very cool, most bands place the breakdown a little after halfway through the song Klavium on the other hand places their breakdown for the last twenty seconds of the song as a final send off.

After that the next song we are met with is "Bleed Your Eyes" and honestly the name says it all, this song is so aggresive I wouldn't be surprised if you did in fact start bleeding out your eyes. The intro again was very thrash metal and this song I would liken more to Anthrax, then Slayer in style. Again though Klavium isn't simply standing on the shoulders of these bands but taking what they've done and mutating it into a fresh new style that we haven't heard yet. "Bleed Your Eyes" involved more instrumental parts which I liked since "Cursed Within" relied heavily on vocals, this song relies more on the extremely talented musicians and their skill set. Although the vocals are still present and extremely powerful its easier to focus on the musical elements in this song.

After that I listened to "Imbalance Of The Cosmos" which if I might add is a really cool name for a song. I dont know what the songs actual meaning is but what I can tell you is it is crafted with the most rage we've heard yet on the EP so whatever Klavium is singing about their not happy about it. This song again has the quick and violent loops that keep your head banging and the hair on your arms standing up and they've still got the slaughter house shrieks going giving the track an extra shot of evil that really helps differentiate from the other bands in the genre. The song all together is very well put together and thought out and the structure is amazingly well orchestrated. The vocals and instruments tango around each other as they seem to switch between one another simultaneously.

The last song on their EP is "Feeling Of Life" this has by far the longest musical intro before the vocals come in and it helps set the mood for the song. The loops aren't quite as quick but the quick hits and guitar plucks make sure that song doesn't loose its speed as it continues to barrel along. This song also has the second and final breakdown on the EP. However its not your typical breakdown, the vocals are still present and theres never actually a lull in the music. Klavium maintains its speed through the breakdown giving it a very cool and peculiar vibe, theres really no way of explaining it unless you listen to the song yourself.

Klavium was a great modern day thrash metal band with definite black metal elements, I would highly recommend them to any Slayer or thrash metal fan for that matter who's looking for their next band to follow. It's insane to think only two people are playing during this EP as it sounds so whole and doesn't lack any elements to it. Give them a listen!

Guns N Roses 2016 Toronto Concert Review

Image result for guns n roses

Last saturday I went to see one of my all time favourite bands for the first time, Guns n Roses. It was not only an amazing night because of hearing all the songs I'd been head banging to since junior kindergarden but also because i never thought I would ever get to see the original line up of Guns N Roses in my lifetime. Well almost the original line up Izzy Stradlin decided to continue playing with The Hollywood Vampires rather then come back to Guns. None the less nothing was going to stop me from seeing the band that literally was the sound track to my childhood. My biggest fear about this concert was that I was going into it with such high expectations that their was no way they could be met. As soon as Axl took the stage and Slash started shredding his guitar I knew that by the end of the night my expectations would not only be met but would be shattered, and shattered they were. Im still in post concert depression as I sit here now reminiscing about how glorious that night was and weeping onto my keyboard. The concert was easily the best concert Ive ever been too. Guns N Roses played such a good show that I will now use it as my comparison to all other concerts I attend and see if they can measure up.

I saw Guns at the sold out Rogers Centre in Toronto, I had never seen a show at the Rogers Centre before aside from sporting events and I have to say it was breathtaking. The sea of people that was north of fifty thousand all singing and dancing was a sight I will never forget. The venue itself isn't built for musical acts so at times it was hard to hear especially when Axl was talking to the fans. Luckily though when GNR played they played so loud and fast that even with the thousands of people singing and crappy audio you could hear them as clear as if they were playing in your living room. Since Im talking about the sound quality at the moment I have to say Axl has some how managed to keep his voice in pristine condition through the years, his voice was on par with how he sounded on their records. Throughout the entire concert I dont think I heard one voice crack or missed note and thats saying something since these guys played for nearly three hours. Thats right three hours, they got on just before 10:00 pm and got off a little before 1:00 am. They played every song you could've wanted to hear and then some, you could really tell that they were giving this show their all. Now that my fan girling is over Ill get on with the songs they played.

The first song Guns played was "Its So Easy" and this song set the tone for the entire night, it was like a flash back to the eighties as Axl screamed out his signature high pitch chorus and danced across the stage. Within seconds of the song starting the crowd lost their minds and went nuts, screaming the lyrics and dancing like crazy people. Slash was shredding at the edge of the stage for almost the entire song and was hanging his guitar over the fans as he plucked his guitar inhumanly fast making everyone who saw his hands at work stare dumbly at how a human being could move that fast.

Without even a moments delay "Its So Easy Ended" and the opening drum beat to "Mr. Brownstone" came on, rattling everyones skull in the venue. This time we were met with another signature vocal characteristic of Axl Rose and that was his extremely low baritone voice. This time though instead of Slash beating his guitar at the edge of the stage him and Duff Mckegan ran and switched sides of the stage before twirling and simultaniously playing their guitars with amazing accuracy. Every break in the vocals Axl ran or danced to a different part of the stage so that everyone was able to get a good view of the rocker. To top off everything that was already going on on stage an insane light show began which synchronized with the drumming that was nearly breathtaking and if anyone their had epilepsy I feel sincerely bad for them.

Then there was a slight lull on stage as Axl said a few comments to the audience that were barely audible because the crowd was so loud after realizing that no one could hear him Axl began to resume playing. Then the title track off of their newest record to date "Chinese Democracy"kicked off giving the crowd an intermission of sorts to refill their beer and go take a dump without missing anything to important. At least a quarter of the floor left and I dont know how many of the people in the cheap seats left during this song, it was almost comical as person after person sat down in a depressed heap like a toddler that had just had their candy bar taken away. I was so pre occupied with people watching that I missed the entire song, not that I was overly broken up about it.

As if to apologize for making us sit through that travesty the next song was one of the most well known songs Guns has written,"Welcome To The Jungle." I thought people went nuts during "Its So Easy" this was a whole new level. Axl walked up to the front of the stage looking extremely pissed off and held the mic up to his mouth before screaming "YOU KNOW WHERE YOU ARE?" At this point the people in the stadium lost it. Before the music had even begun bodies were moving and heads were banging. Then Axl after taking a good long look at the crowd brought the mic back up to his mouth and yelled one more time "YOUR IN THE JUNGLE BABY! YOUR GONNA DIE!" From then on its more or less a blur as fire works were shooting off into the sky, the lights kicked in and the band went absolutely nuts as they danced, thrashed and yelled their way through the song. After playing through that track it was now extremely evident at how hard the band was working to give us a great show they were head to toe dripping with sweat and panting like fat kids in gym class.

Im not gonna review each and every song because they did have a twenty five song set and I know you guys dont want to sit here for an hour and a half as I babble on and on about how great they were. So Im going to skip ahead a couple songs to "Live And Let Die" which is another great song, although its actually not written by Guns but by the band "Wings" pretty much everyone remembers it as a Guns N Roses song. They once again expertly played through the song rocking everyone to the core and Axl's vocal range made the song as good as the first time I heard it with the quick highs and lows it was amazing to listen to.

The next song that everyone seemed to loose their mind was "You Could Be Mine" which pretty much everyone knows as the tune John Connor plays while riding his dirt bike in Terminator 2. Although the response wasn't as crazy as when they played 'Welcome To The Jungle" the crowd was still very much into the track as everywhere you looked heads banged and people chanted the lyrics. Slash again was ripping through his guitar this time he was standing on one of the platforms that elevated him about five feet in the air. That didn't stop him from spinning and banging his head and to compliment his craziness Axl was doing all the dance moves we've been seeing since 1987 when they first debuted with "Appetite For Destruction."

Skipping ahead another couple of songs we were met with the legendary "Sweet Child O' Mine" which when the opening solo started I got goosebumps at how amazing it sounded. The band tightened up ranks for this song instead of their usual spread out wild dancing and everywhere you looked in the crowd their were lighters out and people putting their arms around their friends. It was amazing and the entire audience and Axl sang in unison as the song went on, it was in my opinion the coolest moment Ive ever underwent at a concert. It was down right astounding.

Then their was of course "November Rain" starting out with Axl on the Piano and the band taking a much needed breather as the intro of the song was underway, Guns killed this song to. Even though it is a slower song by them they made sure to keep the rocking atmosphere of the show as they jammed away to "November Rain" getting the entire crowd once again singing along in unison.

The for the finale they played my all time favourite Guns N Roses song "Paradise City" and the audience answered by going just as wild as during "Welcome To The Jungle" as the intro started you could already see people getting ready for Axl to blow that whistle that symbolized the slow part of the song was over and that they were about to unleash hell. Finally when he did the stage show Guns N Roses put on was astronomical, the entire stage erupted in fire works as the band seemed to forget their aching muscles and body parts and go absolutely wild. Spinning, twirling and thrashing their bodies to the beat. I dont think anyone in the band stopped moving for a second during that song as they raged on with everyone in the crowd before finally the last legendary words of the song sprung out "OH WONT YOU PLEASE TAKE ME HOME!" The stage went silent and the screaming and applause was deafening as Guns N Roses slowly filed off the stage.

Im already hoping that Guns N Roses comes back and when they do you can bet Ill be standing front and centre banging my head till Im concussed. They put on an excellent show and reminded everyone that rock and metal are far from dead.

"Goodbye Graceful" debut EP

Image result for goodbye graceful ep

Today I was given the opportunity to listen to another underground talented group of musicians who formed a band called "Goodbye Graceful." Goodbye Graceful is a British heavy metal band who have just released their debut EP and once again I was extremely impressed by the quality and talent that these underground bands possess. This really has nothing to do with their EP but the vocalist for the band Tristan Harris is also the drummer, which I thought was really cool. Being a drummer myself I have insane respect for someone who can not only do the exhausting task of smashing things as hard as you can but also sing and growl as well as he does. Alright Ill shut up about my opinions and get on with the album review.

My favourite song on the record was the track "Sacrifice" the song starts out heavy and only gets heavier. With a drum intro that is almost iconic and had a definite Pantera feel to it, the vocals are not far from the intro and they rip into your chest and pull your heart out within seconds. The absolute brutality of the vocals really sets the tone for what you can expect from the rest of the song. Its fast, its angry and it'll have you head banging in a matter of seconds. The melodic parts of the song like the chorus are not your typical vocals. Although the singer isn't openly growling the raspy edge to the vocals makes sure that the song doesn't loose the heavy vibe even for a second as Goodbye Graceful continues hammering their assault into the listener.

The next song that caught my attention was "Ringworm" the song starts off with quick growls and spastic musical verses, which cause for an immensely heavy beginning immediately launching the audience into a rage for no reason other then the music is just that heavy. Within the first thirty seconds of the song we are met with a beautifully orchestrated breakdown that slows the pace of the song down without sacrificing the anger and rage thats being portrayed and gives the drummer a chance to get some gatorade before he keels over from dehydration. After about fifteen seconds of this face melting breakdown the song gets back into its violent and sporadic loop. Near the end of the song Goodbye Graceful throws us a curve ball and does quite possibly the weirdest breakdown I've ever heard. The harsh tuned down guitars and angry drum hits are silenced and followed by a few extremely melodic synthesizer notes. Now it only lasts for about three seconds before the harsh breakdown continues. But then the loop continues keeping their audience in a state of perpetual shock not knowing what's going on. At first it caught me off guard and I wasn't sure how I felt about it but as the song progressed and the loops continued I began to love it. The quick melodic synth notes added a whole other musical layer to the song.

The next song I heard was entitled "Set Us Free" the guitar solo that starts this album off is amazing, I loved every second of it and my only complaint was it wasn't longer but one can't complain to much when the growls of the song are so powerful that your eyes almost bug out of your head. I have no idea if this song had an underlying meaning or what even the song was about, but what I do know is that it is insanely heavy even with the first traditional clean vocals to be heard on the album Goodbye Graceful manages to keep us in a constant state of rage. That rage only intensifies when we are met with the breakdown that happens about three quarters of the way into the song and continues till the very last note. "Set Us Free" is a roller coaster from the opening note till the final smash of the cymbal.

The final song I heard on the record was entitled "Black and Blue" which had a very different intro from any of the other songs on the record. It started off relatively soft in a power ballad style which I was surprised by given the other songs starting off like a derailed freight train. The song is by far the most meaningful and softest track on the record but lets face it can any Rock & Roll album really be complete without a song about a girl? Which "Black and Blue" is all about a girl I assume and really brings the emotional feel to the record. This song may not be the favourite for some of you diehard metal fans who like your metal to be untainted with clean vocals. I for one though think that their is a time for growls and a time for the melodic undertones and clean vocals.I believe good by Graceful hit the nail on the head with their timing and that their EP and will make an insanely strong impression on anyone who listens to their EP.

Goodbye Graceful put forth an excellent EP that many of you will love and I would highly recommend them. They have an original sound and doing things their own way and I respect anyone who puts out the music they want to put out with little consideration for the outside world. But in Goodbye Graceful's case the music they've put out also happens to be very well written and is sure to be a hit with any metal head who gives this great band a shot.

Goodbye Graceful's EP is available on all major music buying platforms for more information check out their face book.

Wild Tinderbox debut EP review

Image result for wild tinderbox

Wild Tinderbox is a hard rock band out of Austin Texas that formed two years ago in 2014, within that time the band has worked to put together a five song EP. I was given the ok to giver these southern boys a review and once again I was pleasantly surprised by the music that was sent to me. When Im listening to new bands and their EP's your never sure what your going to get, the biggest nerve racker is wondering if you just agreed to review some half witted band with a piece of crap record. Wild Tinderbox took that worry away from me within the first twenty seconds of the record.

The first song I heard was called "Lava Surfin" aside from this being the opening track on the record the song also caught my attention because of the peculiar title of the song. The song starts out with a quick guitar riff that immediately reminded me of Motorhead with its abrasive and repetitive pattern that worked well with the rest of the tune. The drums played a simple thrash metal pattern that would've made Slayer proud and the vocals had an odd but intriguing sound that kept me interested in the musical elements.

"Battle In The Chopper" was my favourite intro off of the entire album, unlike the other songs on the album it came in with an off beat almost disco intro that I thought was fantastic. I wasn't sure if I was still listening to Wild Tinderbox or if I some how had switched to an Elvis song. It was a great start to the song and completely took me by surprise which in my opinion there's nothing better than when a band throws a curve ball in their record to keep the audience entertained. The groove metal continues throughout the rest of the song with a continuous guitar riff and off beat drum pattern that makes the song almost feel like it could be played in a 1970's club. The song then begins to sing about war and violence which would normally seem odd with such a disco beat but then the breakdown happens and all elements of dance or groove are butchered and what were left with is a great metal riff.

The song "Lost In Space" also had a unique start to it, this song actually reminded me of early rock which only furthered my interest in the band. Each song was so different from one another that it was hard not to keep listening. I dont even know what to compare this track to, the music seems to take on a life of its own with the band making sure that the listener never knows what to expect.

In conclusion Wild Tinderbox is a promising band that has a very bright future and definitely its own original take on the hard rock music genre. I am curious to see where this band goes with their careers.
